In the days after the Jordan River had stood still and the people had crossed on dry ground, Israel made camp on the plains of Jericho. The wilderness wandering lay behind them; the land of promise lay ahead. Between the two stood a city with strong walls and barred gates, a symbol of what still seemed impossible.
