In a village where the roads remember footsteps, a sturdy brown shoe and a fluttery blue shoe are whisked apart by a gusty night and must cross the quiet countryside to find each other again.
People in some places will tell you their roads are just packed dirt and stones, nothing more. But in the village at the edge of the winter fields, they say the roads remember. They say if you walk a path kindly and long enough, it begins to know your weight and your way of going, and if ever you are lost, the very ground will nudge you homeward. This is a story from such a place, the kind of story told when the wind sleeps outside and the kettle hums softly and everyone draws a little closer to the glow.
